Located in the city of Daejeon, the Information and Communications University is a Korean institution of higher learning put up in 1998. The university’s chief specialty is engineering and research in information technology. Besides the engineering school, it also boasts of a management school. The university has a substantial foreign population with about 20% of the enrolled graduate students being international students. Courses taught in English predominate the curriculum quite unlike most Korean universities. At the end of 2008, ICU intends to combine with KAIST.
ICU now has two schools: an engineering school and a business school. The concentration of both is on information technology. Now with 764 students, the engineering faculty conducts research cheifly in computer science and communications technology. The smaller business school has a total of 162 students and is concentrated on the management and financial sides of the IT industry.
ICU offers undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and Engineering or Electrical and Computer Engineering in the engineering school while in the business school, the B.S. degrees in IT-Business is awarded. Graduate degrees are also on offer in specialized programs in Engineering or IT-Business. Students can also take the combined M.S./Ph.D. course. Besides these degrees, the engineering faculty also awards the degree of Master of Software Engineering under a joint program with Carnegie Mellon University.
